Current situation

The lack of places conducive to physical activities for families and seniors was a concern that was raised during the public consultations conducted as part of the development of the Family and Seniors Policy in 2017.

Main objective

The Town has undertaken to improve its outdoor recreation areas for families, individuals and seniors. The objective was to make places accessible, free, safe and adapted to the population in order to practice physical, and outdoor activities. The development of the park behind Town Hall is part of the action plan of the policy for families and seniors.

Procedures undertaken

The following actions were taken following the adoption of the family policy action plan.

  • Relocation of the outdated baseball field to Parc de l’Envol;
  • Development of a commemorative and intergenerational park behind the Town Hall.

In 2018, a grant application was submitted to the Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing for the development of the park.  This application is for the development of:

  • lighted pathways to walk around the park safety;
  • a bandstand-type gazebo to host cultural events or outdoor recreational activity (yoga, Zumba, etc.);
  • urban furniture for relaxation (benches, tables).

In April 2019, a consultation with the Town’s merchants raised the need for a central location for activities.  Among those expressed was the need for a reception structure for cyclists, accessible public toilets, a water fountain on Principale Street and a central gathering place for the village.

Also in 2019, the Town was working with Loisirs et Sports Montérégie to develop a plan for the desired intergenerational park.  During this process with Loisirs et Sports Montérégie, each objective was reviewed and further developed. In the interest of ensuring an intergenerational park, a section for the physical and motor development of children was added.

Inspired by the concepts of Projets Espaces, which is a framework for the development of parks and playgrounds, a plan was developed, respecting the wishes of citizens.  The Planning Advisory Committee was involved to add input and direction to the plan.

These activities enabled the Town to apply for and receive a grant from the Programme d’aide financière aux infrastructures récréatives et sportives in February 2020.

In April 2021, the Town commissioned a landscape architect to assist in finalizing the plans and support the project.

Results

  • The initial plan produced by Loisirs et Sports Montérégie presents the overall vision;
  • Revised Plan in 2022 highlighting the progress of the work at 80%.
